Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS — using Windows boot manager & grub 2

網路上可以找到一堆的Windows和ubuntu安裝教學, 但是我在多重機時, 一直遇到問題….. 有時是開機時, 可以看到grub畫面, 但是Window根本進不去; 再不然就是ubuntu安裝後, 重新開機卻直接進了Windows。我很有實驗精神地試著把grub裝到每個parition去, 最後把所有的boot sector都弄爛了, 結果當然還是不能雙重開機。我用力找了很多的網站, 很少人有寫安裝時的注意事項，最後, 終於找到中文版的Windows 7 (or Vista) 與 ubuntu 多重開機 (dual boot with EasyBCD), 實在太感謝了。

Many websites provide step by step instructions for installing Windows 7 (or Ubuntu), such as  ”Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu in Perfect Harmony“, “WindowsDualBoot“,….,  but few of them address problems that we may encounter while installing dual-boot.

Before we start the dual-boot installation, there are tips we need to know.  Here, I assume that the Windows 7 is installed before the Ubuntu.    Please note the following steps while you are try to make a successful dual-boot :

• Ubuntu installation:  In the last step “Ready to Install“,  press “Advanced” button.  For the destination that bootloader will be installed, select the first sector of your Ubuntu, i.e. the device either the / or the /boot will be installed.  If you have allocated the /boot, choose its corresponding device, otherwise, use the root (/) device.
• Reboot: After complete the installation of Ubuntu, reboot the computer.  It’s normal that there is NO option for Ubuntu in the menu of Windows Boot Manager.  Don’t panic, just enter the Windows 7.
• Windows 7: In order to make the Windows Boot Manager knows where to load the Ubuntu.  You need to rewrite the MBR (Master Boot Record).  A free tool EasyBCD, can help to perform such modification.
• Windows 7: Install and run EasyBCD.   Press “Add New Entry” button, select “Linux/BSD” tab.  Select the ‘GRUB 2‘ as the type of the entry.  Give the name of your linux, and then press “Add Entry” button.
• Reboot: You will see the Windows Boot Manager can load Windows and Ubuntu.
• Done

In this example, the EasyBCD is added a point of the Ubuntu boot loader to the MBR.   At this point, when you choose to load Ubuntu, it will be directed to the Grub menu.  You can use the Start Up Manager to change the waiting time of Grub menu.

GPS Data Logger Software – BT747 (Ubuntu 11.04)

BT747 is a software for GPS Data Logger Devices.   It compatible with most MTK-chipset GPS Data Loggers or Tracking Devices.  The GPS position can be delivered as HTML for Google Maps API, GPX, KML, KMZ, NMEA,…  BT747 support for multiple computer platforms, either desktop or mobile devices, such as Windows, Linux, Blackberry, MacOSX, PDA, …

My computer is running Ubuntu 11.04 (32-bit).  The default  Java Web Start of OpenJDK has trouble to invoke  desktop version of BT747.    According to this article, the author recommended to install sun-java6 instead of the default one.   Following the steps will successfully complete the sun-java6 installation (assume that you have the right to do something as a superuser):

• sudo add-apt-repository ‘deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner’
• sudo apt-get update
• sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

After complete the sun-java6 installation,  you can download and Install the desktop version of BT747. When you run the BT747 and plug your GPS to your computer.  Please remember to trun ON the GPS and you may need to change the speed (38400, 11520…).  Press the  ’Connect’ button (on the bottom), the GPS Device Data (on the right hand side) will be shown.  The following is an example of my GPS (NcsNavi R150+):

If you need the DOP (Dilution of Precision)  for your GPS data, goto the ‘Device Settings’ tab, check the PDOP, HDOP, VDOP.  Here is the screenshot of my GPS:

If you will like to download the GPS data, before you press the ‘Download’ buttom, you may need to modify some file names (‘Log Operations’ tab).  A Download Progress bar will display on the bottom right while downloading.   The download process saves GPS data into a .bin file.  You can use the .bin file to convert to any file type in the Convert box area.
